Nigeria, Morocco, South Africa, other WAFCON-bound teams test readiness with friendlies

Less than two months to the 2026 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, almost all the qualified countries for the biggest continental women’s football tournament are utilising this FIFA window to test their readiness for the event which will also serve as the qualifying competition for next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup finals in Brazil.

Starting from today in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso’s senior women’s team will host their Malian counterparts as both countries try to test their preparedness for the upcoming competition while

WAFCON defending champions Nigeria will tackle Senegal at Remo Stars Sports Complex in Ikenne, Ogun state tomorrow in the first leg of the double-header showdown between the two West African neighbours.

Also, tomorrow, WAFCON-bound Egypt will lay ambush against fellow North African country Tunisia in Cairo and Ivory Coast will welcome debutants Cape Verde senior women’s team in Abidjan.

On Saturday,  South Africa will be away to Japan in Tokyo to test the Japanes senior women’s team for size while Tanzania will battle Malawi at home just Zambia will welcome Kenya in Lusaka although another feature pitched Kenya against Zimbabwe.

Then, on Sunday, Burkina Faso and Mali will meet again for their second match in the widow period even as Monday, June 8, will see Nigeria’s Super Falcons clash again with Teranga Lionesses of Senegal in the second match of the double-header at the same Remo Stars Sports Complex in Ikenne.

Also, South Africa will return to the pitch again on Tuesday, June 9, in Tokyo against Japan to conclude their two-match trip to the Asian country just as Morocco and New Zealand will meet in Christ Church.

On the same date, Zambia and Kenya will meet while Zimbabwe will take on Kenya in their second matches in one week to round off the June FIFA international window.

African women’s national football teams are utilizing the international FIFA window to play high-profile friendlies and the FIFA Series 2026, using these match-ups to prepare for the rescheduled 2026 WAFCON taking place in Morocco.
