Four years after the national U-17 girls nicknamed Flamingos picked a bronze medal at the 2022 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in India, the team will try to do better than their predecessors in the 2026 edition which kicks off in Morocco tomorrow by going out to win their first group match against Poland in Rabat.

This is even the Busari Hakeem Isholal-tutored  Flamingos have never been loaded with budding stars than the current squad ready to take on the rest of the world when the competition gets on the way tomorrow.
Infact, it may not be wrong to say that the current squad is loaded to the hilt with young talents waiting to surprise the world such as attackers like Chidera Harmony Chidi, Oluebube Umejiaku, Sakirat Sarafa and  free-scoring Oluwakemi Adegbuyi.
There are also good goalkeepers in Jane Ijirigho,Onyinyechi Opara and Mercy Felix who are strong enough to go far in the competition this year.
Busari’s team can also boast of reliable defenders Elizabeth Adesuyi, Azeezat Oduntan, Ohunene Sunday and Pattra Oparanmegwa and midfielders like Muinat Rotimi, Mary Dunstan and Favour Nkwocha among others.
Happily, the Flamingos are currently the West African Football Union (WAFU-B) Champions courtesy of their exploits in last month’s tournament where they recorded an impressive results by winning all their matches.
With the above credentials, Nigerians should expect a decent outing by these young girls although the pedigree of coach Busari and his coaching staff will determine the team’s successful campaign.
In all, this current set of Flamingos look good to ruffle feathers in Morocco and are very sure to progress further in the competition as Nigeria will play three group-stage matches against Poland, Puerto Rico, and North Korea (Korea DPR).
The last time Nigeria made a podium finish in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup was in India in 2022 with the country beating Germany in 3–2 in a penalty shoot-out after the regulation time ended 3-3.
