Five weeks to Los Angeles 2028  qualifiers: Super Falcons yet to get head coach

By Harry Awurumibe, Editor, Africa’s No.1 Women Football Journalist
Five weeks to the crucial Los Angeles Games Olympic Women’s Football Tournament African qualifiers two-legged ties against Comoros slated for October 5 to 13, 2026, Super Falcons are still without a head coach,
Prompt News reports.
But for the dethroned African champions Nigeria, time is of the essence to appoint a substantive head coach who will start the rebuilding of the fractured team just as football fans in the country who are still bitter over Super Falcons’ inability to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup finals in Brazil will not like to see Nigeria fail to pick the Los Angeles 2028 ticket.
Nigeria will play the first leg away to Comoros between October 5 to 8 while the second leg will be at the yet to be determined venue in
Nigeria from October 10 to 13
Should Nigeria eliminate Comoros over two legs, the Super Falcons will qualify for the third round, where they are scheduled to face either Atlas Lionesses of Morocco or Congolese senior women’s team in the fixtures coming up between February 23 and March 6, 2027.
With Morocco finish 4th in the last WAFCON and Nigeria eliminated in the quarter-finals by Cameroon, the meeting with Morocco could be a tough one for Nigeria because the Atlas Lionesses have established themselves among Africa’s leading women’s teams in recent years.
The colossal failure of Super Falcons in the 14th edition of WAFCON triggered the mass sacking in Nigeria football with the head coach of the team Justine Madugu and his assistants kicked out by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) which also lost its leadership with the resignation of erstwhile President Ibrahim Musa Gusau, Executive Committee Members and General Secretary Dr. Mohammed Sanusi.
However, five weeks to Los Angeles 2028 qualifiers two-legged ties against Comoros and nearly three weeks after the sacking of the Madugu led coaching crew, Super Falcons are yet to get a head coach.
The National Sports Commission (NSC) which supervises the NFF is expected to make the appointment of the new Super Falcons with the federation’s buy-in but this has not happened few weeks to the upcoming crucial qualifiers.
Recall that the 10-time winners of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) suffered three humiliating defeats at the recently concluded WAFCON in Morocco which ensured that Nigeria lost her African title and also failed to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup finals in Brazil.
The none qualification of Nigeria even for the FIFA Inter-continental Play-off later in the year after a 2-1 loss to South Africa’s Banyana Banyana finally ensured that Nigeria will miss the biggest global women’s football showpiece for the first time ever since participating in the first edition in China in 1991.
