Hosts Morocco has become the first African nation to qualify for the quarter-finals stage of the 14th edition of Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after their hard earned 1-0 victory over bitter rivals Algeria last night has effectively guaranteed a quarter-final ticket and a touching distance to grab the FIFA Women’s World Cup Brazil 2027 ticket.
This is even as Morocco’s dual objectives of lifting the WAFCON trophy and picking World Cup ticket in the ongoing tournament which is serving as African qualifiers for the global women’s football competition next year is fast becoming a reality because the four losing quarter-finalists of this edition of the tournament will play an additional round to determine Africa’s two representatives for the inter-continental play-off for another chance to qualify for the World Cup.
Recall the four semi-finalists will secure automatic qualification for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Brazil 2027, making every knockout-stage match crucial in the quest to reach the world’s biggest stage.
