Nigeria massacre Niger 15-0, Sets tournament record

Nigeria senior women’s football team, Super Falcons literally took Niger Republic opponents to the cleaners by thumping the newcomers 15 nil in their Group B second match of the on-going West Africa Football Union (WAFU)  championship in Ivory Coast on Saturday.

The tie which was played at Parc des Sport, Abidjan was reduced to a mere training session by the Falcons as they soon discovered that the Nigerien ladies were not  in any way near their standard by going on early offensive. The scores against Niger Republic was  so many that the first half ended 9-0 in favour of Nigeria and the African women’s football power house scored 6 more goals in the second half to bring the final score to 15-0.

Perhaps the high points of the match were the 15 nil scoreline by Nigeria and the record 5 goals scored by emerging top striker, Uchenna Kanu who had also scored a hat-trick in the Group B first game against Burkina Faso last Friday. Kanu who is a leading goalscorer in the tournament with 8 goals already may have played herself into Head Coach. Thomas Dennerby’s FIFA Women’s World Cup final 23-man list.

Other scorers against the hapless Niger ladies are youth international Cynthia Aku who also won the Woman of the Match Award after the game and Rofiat Sule who scored a brace each as well as Chioma Wogu, Alice Ogebe, Joy Bokiri and defefenders Glory Ogbonna and Chidinma Okeke.

Meanwhile, Nigeria and Mali who have also qualified for the semi final stage after two victories too will clash on Tuesday in the last Group B tie to determine the group winner.7
