Campions Man City, English Premier League ends dramatically

By Harry Awurumibe, Abuja:

Manchester City Football Club this evening thrashed Brighton & Hoves 4-1 away from home to retain the English Premier League trophy it won last year in the last day of a tough season. City won with 98 points to top rivals, Liverpool’s 97 points.

Goals from Kun Aguero in the 28th’ barely one minute after the Citizens have conceeded a goal in the 27th’, no thanks to Brighton’s G. Murray strike, gave the Coach Pep Guadiola’s men the latitude to go for all out attack. Soon A. Laporte’s goal made it 2-1 advantage Man City at half time.

But on resumption, the defending Champions out muscled their hosts in the departments as worked hard to score two more goals by Rayad Mahrez and Ikay Gundogan in the 63rd’ and 72nd’ respectively.

By this scoreline, Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over dangerous Wolverhampton Wanderers FC at Anifields stadium became a mere academic exercise except that Senegalese star, Sadio Mane who scored the two goals in the 17th’ and 81st’ entered the history book as the 2018/2019 season joint EPL top goalscorer with teammate, Mohamed Salah.

However, uninspiring Chelsea FC laboured to a 0-0 draw Leicester FC to garner a total of 72 points to beat Tottenham Hotspurs FC to the 3rd place finish while Spurs picked the Top Four place with 71 points against Arsenal’s 70 and Manchester United’s 66 points respectively.

Arsenal and Man United will play in the UEFA Europa League next season while the first four teams in the league log will play in the lucrative UEFA Champions Leaque (UCL).
