Football fans of Nigeria extraction living in Morocco turned out in good numbers to drum up support for the Super Falcons in their hard-won 1-0 defeat of stubborn Mares of Botswana in both teams’ Group B second match in the ongoing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) at Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca yesterday.
The match was heading to a barren draw, but China-based Super Falcons super-sub Chinwendu Veronica Ihezuo’s 89th minute goal gave Nigeria the three points courtesy of the unprecedented cheers, drumming and singing by Nigerian fans from the section of the stands inside Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca.
Prompt News reports that fans of Nigerian origin residence in Morocco who came from every party of the city of Casablanca and nearby towns thronged the match venue even before the arrival of Super Falcons from their Ibis Casablanca City Center hotel on Thursday evening.
They made their voices heard at Larbi Zaouli Stadium as their singing and cheering of every move each Nigerian player on the pitch made against Botswana during the game aided the Super Falcons to put in more efforts in the match especially towards the last 15th minute when the experience of the Nigerians began to manifest against their opponents.
Perhaps it was that vociferous support from the Nigerians at the stands and consistent probing of the Botswana goal area that worked magic for the team to grind out a late win which has propelled Nigeria to the quarter-finals of the tournament which will come up next week after securing the maximum six points from two matches on the bounce.
In fact, one overzealous bare-bodied male fan defiled the stadium security cordon to run into the pitch after Ihezuo’s last-minute goal to celebrate with the players to the surprise of spectators.
Speaking after the match, a Nigerian Christopher Nwabuzo, an ex-footballer, turned Player Intermediary and businessman resident in Casablanca, revealed that many Nigerians living across Morocco especially in Casablanca will fill a big stadium as he promised Super Falcons more of the support they got against Botswana in the subsequent matches up to WAFCON finals in Rabat on July 26, 2026 if Nigeria makes it yo that stage this time around.
