Two late goals by forwards Peace Emem Essien (90+5′) and Mary Mamudu 90+11′ helped Nigeria’s Edo Queens beat Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa 2-1 which was enough to qualify the club for the semi-final of the 4th edition of the CAF Women’s Champions League (CAFWCL).
The defending champions (Mamelodi Sundowns) who scored first in the 24′ courtesy of Melinda Kgadiete goal were heading to a historic win as at 90′ of the tension-soaked match but it was not to be as Edo Queens staged a late come back in the extra time to score two late goals within a space of six added minutes to dump the defending champions out of the competition.
Thus Edo Queens finished top of Group B with seven points and plus four goals while fellow debutantes FC Masar of Egypt came second after recording a 2-1 victory over hapless Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) today to also garner seven points but with inferior goals difference.
The West African Football Union (WAFU-B) champions will now tackle TP Mazembe of Congo DR in Tuesday’s first semi-final match at Stade Laarbi Zaouli in Casablanca while runners-up FC Masar confronts AS FAR of Morocco winners of Group A at Stade Ben Ahmed El Abdi in El Jadida the same day.
