At last, South Africa strikes Gold, win WAFCON trophy in Morocco

After several failed  attempts to lift the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), South Africa’s Banyana Banyana has finally won the elusive trophy by defeating hosts Morocco 2-1 in the final of the 2022 WAFCON at Complexe Mohammed V in Casablanca Saturday night.

A brace by exciting forward Hildah Magai in the 63′ and 71′ put South Africa on the driver’s seat and the Banyana Banyana could have scored more goals if they had been clinical in front of goalpost.

However, the high octane encounter got even tougher as the clock continued to tick but a moment of magic by Fatima Taogounat found

England-based  Rosella Ayane who cleanly beat Andile Dlamini of South Africa in the 80′.

The match became so intensed as it was getting to an end with the Atlas Lionesses piling pressure on South Africa and the nine minute added time seemed eternity to the South Africans until the Rwandan referee Salima Mukansanga sounded the long whistle to bring the match to an end.

With their nemesis Nigeria out of the way, South Africa was destined to win the WAFCON on their fifth attempt after they were denied several times by Nigeria”s Super Falcons even at their backyard in Johannesburg in 2000 when South Africa hosted WAFCON and most recently in the 2018 WAFCON final in Ghana where Nigeria defeated South Africa via penalty shoot-out to win the 9th title.
