Fast-rising Super Falcons defender, Glory Akumbu Ogbonna has assured that Nigeria will beat Cote d Ivoire in the return leg of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics women’s football tournament African qualifier tie slated for Agege stadium, Lagos on Monday.
African champion, Super Falcons of Nigeria were on Thurdsay in Abidjan forced to a barren draw by host, Les Femelles Elephantes of Cote d’Ivoire in the Ivoirien capital, Abidjan.
The encounter held at the Parc des Sports de Reproducible saw both teams creating several opportunities but failing to find the back of the net, with Nigeria’s captain, Asisat Lamina Oshoala spurning two excellent chances to win the match for Nigeria. Midfielder, Amarachi Okoronkwo also saw red in the match.
But Ogbonna who played full game in Abuja and helped the Nigerian team to keep a clean sheet despite the several attempts by the Ivoriens to breach the Falcons defence is optimistic of a favourable result in the return leg inside Agege stadium, Lagos.
“l am very optimistic of Nigeria’s victory in Lagos and by the grace of God we (Falcons) will progress to the next round. I don’t see our opponents from Cote d Ivoire beating us in our country. It will not happen in our time”, Ogbonna said.
The Ibom Queens FC of Uyo captain argued that the Falcons were unlucky not to score in Abidjan on Thursday, pointing out that “if we are a little luckier in the first leg Nigeria would have won the game with at least two or three goals”.
Said she,”The Super Falcons have what it takes to beat any team in Africa including our opponents so the second leg will not be the first played in their home. We have resolved to win our next match to make our fans and nation proud”.
