France 2019: USA beats stubborn Spain 2-1, set up tricky tie against France

Estoril, Portugal – Thursday November 8, 2018: The women’s national teams of the United States (USA) and Portugal (POR) play in an international friendly game at Estadio António Coimbra da Mota.

Defending Champions, the United States of America had to dig deep before overpowering Spain 2-1 today in Reims with ‘golden-haired Megan Rapinoe stepping out twice in the game to score two penalty goals to zoom into the quarter final stage where host, France are waiting for a tricky match.

Team captain, Rapinoe beat Spain’s goalkeeper, S. Panos with a right footed effort in the 7th minute only for Spain’s forward, J.Hermoso to pop up in the 9th minute to loop over a charging USA goalkeeper, Naeher.

The cagey match was to later open up early in the second half as both teams came out to seek for a winning goal but it was USA that got her second in the 76th minute after Rapinoe once again held her nerves to score from the penalty spot again.

By the victory USA has secured a place in the quarter final where they will confront the host country, France in a winner takes match billed for Parc des Prince in Paris on Friday, June 28.

It has been predicted to be the end of the road for one of the illustrious teams in the on-going 8th FIFA Women’s World Cup.
