The West Africa Football Union (WAFU) Cup final match between host country, Cote d’ Ivoire and Nigeria played this evening in Abidjan lived up to its billing even as the Super Falcons came from behind to beat the Elephantes 5-4 on penalty kicks to lift the coveted trophy.
It took the individual brilliance of the fast emerging goal-machine, Uchenna Kanu in the added time of the tension-soaked match to bring Head Coach Thomas Dennerby’s team back to level terms with Ivoirians who were cruising home courtesy of the 45th minute goal from Tenerife striker, Ange Koko N’Guessan.
With the score line tied at 1-1 at full time, the two teams settled for the unpredictability of penalty shoot-out to decide the winner and it was Nigeria that triumphed 5-4 on penalties to lift their first WAFU Cup.
The Nigerian contingent will arrive Abuja tomorrow early enough to travel out again on Monday for the final camping in Austria to enable Dennerby to pick his final FIFA Women’s World Cup 23-woman team.
