Atlas Lionesses of Morocco
By Harry Awurumibe, Africa’s No.1 Women Football Journalist Despite going one woman down in the second half of their international friendly match against Cape Verde, Morocco’s senior women’s team Atlas Lionesses walloped their opponents 3-0 at Moulay El Hassan Stadium in Rabat at the weekend.
Three first-half goals scored by defender Nouhaila Benzina (22′); forward Ibtissam Jraidi (42′), and left-footed forward Sanaà Mssoudy (45+2′) ensured that Morocco won her second match and drew one out of three games during this first FIFA international window of the year.
The original host of the CAF TotalEnergies WAFCON 2026 had on March 3, played out a 1-1 draw with Burkina Faso even as the Atlas Lionesses had on February 27 thrashed the Mares of Burkina Faso 5-0 in continuation of Morocco’s build up to this year’s WAFCON earlier billed to hold from March 17 to April 3, 2026. The competition will now be held from July 25 to August 16, 2026.
According to the head coach of Morocco Jorge Vilda Rodríguez, the FIFA international window has allowed the coaching crew to test different lineups and tactics as well as to give younger players experience they needed, pointing out that playing series of friendlies are giving him and his colleagues in other countries opportunities to prepare their squads ahead of the tournament.
