WAFCON 2024 : Black Queens coach names four home-based in squad for pre-tournament camp

Less than 21 days to their opening match at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) against reigning African champions, the Bafana Banyana Banyana of South Africa, Black Queens of Ghana’s head coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren has named a 24-player squad for pre-tournament preparations at the famous Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence, Prompt News reports.

This is even as the Swedish coach named only four home-based players in the squad to fight for their places in the final list of Black Queens. The four players are from the Malta Guinness Women’s Premier League. They are Comfort Yeboah and Nancy Amoh of Ampem Darkoa Ladies and goalkeepers Afi Amenyeku of Northern Ladies and Kerrie McCarthy of Kumasi Academy.

Notable overseas-based players such as Princella Adubea, Doris Boaduwaa, Evelyn Badu, Grace Asantewaa, Anasthesia Achiaa, and Portia Boakye are included in the squad.

The Queens have struggled in recent international friendlies, suffering defeats to Morocco, Senegal, and recently in a double-header against Ivory Coast away in Abidjan.

This pre-tournament preparations camp at the famous Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence marks coach Bjorkegren’s fourth squad announcement since taking charge of the team.

He will use the final phase of preparations to sharpen his squad ahead of their return to the continental showpiece even as the selected players will have a final training abroad before landing in Morocco in the first week of July.

Ghana will begin their WAFCON campaign in Oujda against South Africa, before facing Mali and Tanzania in Berkane.
