Nine-time African champions Nigeria has been paired with Southern Africa country Botswana and two North African nations Algeria and Tunisia in Group B of next year’s CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) Morocco 2024.Nigeria’s group was revealed at the CAF WAFCON Morocco 2024
draws conducted on Friday, November 22, 2024, at the Mohammed VI Technical Centre in Salé, Morocco.
Prompt News reports that Africa’s top 12 teams that qualified for the prestigious tournament which will hold from July 5 to July 26, 2025, in Morocco have been drawn into three groups of four teams.
Hosts Morocco has been drawn with Zambia, the bronze medal winner of the 2022 edition of WAFCON; Senegal and Congo Democratic Republic in Group A.
According to the draws, the defending champions South Africa has been drawn in Group C alongside Tanzania and two West African countries Ghana and Mali.
The draw ceremony which was supervised by CAF Director of Competitions, Samson Adamu who explained that the draws was done according to the regulations guiding the competition hence the 12 qualified teams were seeded into four levels based on their FIFA rankings.
Said he: “This seeding ensures a balanced initial distribution of teams for the tournament. This meticulous process ensured an evenly distributed competition, setting the stage for captivating match-ups right from the group phase”.
Present at the event are CAF President, Dr. Patrice Motsepe of South Africa and key members of CAF.
Nigeria finished in the fourth position in the last WAFCON also held in Morocco under former American-born coach Randy Waldrum while the country last won the trophy in Ghana in 2018 under Sweden tactician Thomas Dennerby.
