CAFWCL: Edo Queens, FC Masar settle for draw

Nigeria women’s football league champions, Edo Queens failed to secure their second victory in the ongoing CAF Women’s Champions League as they played out a goalless draw with the hard-fighting FC Masar of Egypt at Laarbi Zaouli stadium in Casablanca, Morocco Wednesday evening.

The encounter was a tightly contested affair, with both teams eager to claim the maximum points but it was not to be as clear-cut chances were few and wide apart, although forwardliners Florence Folashade Ijamilusi and Peace Emem Essien put a lot of pressure on the defence of Masar to get early goals.

Despite increased pressure from Edo Queens in the late stages of the game, Masar’s solid defensive performance ensured the game ended in a draw.

However, Edo Queens are still top of the table with four points but only ahead of Masar on goal difference while Mamelodi Sundowns are third with three points and Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) are without a point.

Earlier in the day,  Sundowns Ladies bounced back to the winning ways by thrashing CBE 4-0. This result keeps the South African side in contention for a semi-final spot alongside the Nigerian and Egyptian teams.

With no clear leader yet in Group B, the semi-final match will be intense until the final whistle as Edo Queens face a rejuvenated Sundowns side on Sunday while Masar will take on the already eliminated CBE.
