2024 FIFA U-20WCQ: Nigeria beats Tanzania 2-1, qualify for final round

Nigeria’s junior women’s football team, Falconets survived a scary onslaught from visiting Tanzania’s U-20 side to book their place in the final round of the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup African qualifiers courtesy of a 2-1 victory over the East Africans at Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja on Sunday.

By the victory,  Nigeria has qualified to meet Burundi in the final stage on a 3-2 goals aggregate after both teams played out a 1-1 draw in the first leg tie in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania last week.

Prompt News reports that  one goal in each half by Janet Akekoromowei (20′) and former Nigeria’s U-17 star, Comfort Folorunsho (’60) earned Falconets a 2-1 victory on Sunday to seal a date with Burundi for a place in the finals billed for Colombia. Jamila Rajani (25′) scored the lone goal of Tanzania in the first half.

However, the handful of home fans who watched the match in Abuja had their hearts in the mouth following the relentless onslaught from the Tanzanians who tied the game at a stage, a situation which made many jittery that the visitors may upset their more illustrious opponents, Nigeria.

Meanwhile, Falconets head coach Christopher Musa Danjuma has revealed that he will work hard to rejig the team before the final two matches against Burundi.

Speaking to reporters immediately after the match in Abuja, Danjuma insisted that his wards played according to instruction and he believed in the players to step up in the next two matches against Burundi, saying that “I will overhaul every aspect of the team from goalkeeping to defence, midfield and attack before our next matches”.
