World football ruing body, Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) Monday announced it has sanctioned Nigeria following the crowd trouble that occurred immediate after the FIFA World Cup
Qatar 2022 African qualifier tie against Ghana.
According to FIFA document made available to the media on Monday, Nigeria was fined the sum of CHF150,000 (N64million) “for failure to implement existing safety rules and failure to ensure that law and order are maintained in the stadium”.
The statement also said that the three-time African Champions will play one match without spectators due to invasion of the field of play and throwing of objects.
However, the continental football governing body, CAF has approved that the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja be used for the 2023 AFCON qualifier match between Nigeria and Sierra Leone.
This approval puts to an end speculations that the edifice will be barred from hosting international matches in the wake of the crowd disturbances that trailed the ill-fated second leg of FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 African qualifier clash against Ghana.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) as a responsible organisation will ensure the match against Sierra Leone be played behind closed doors.
