Eagles crash-land in Garoua:Super Eagles failed to progress beyond the group stage after flattering to deceive with three wins in three games.
Another big name in African football has again bite the dust as Nigeria was on Sunday dumped out of the 33rd Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) by Tunisia after a 1-0 victory over the West African nation in the Round of 16 match played at Stade Roumde Adjia, Garoua.
A 47th minute long range effort by Yousef Mskani which was fumbled by Nigeria’s goalkeeper, Maduka Okoye, was all that the Carthage Eagles needed to outwit the Super Eagles on the day it mattered most.
To pour salt on Nigeria’s injury, substitute, Alexander Iwobi was brought in to help his team turn around the match in their favour was sent off for a poor tackle in the 55th minute. He replaced Kelechi Iheanacho who could not show his class in the tie.
At this point, the Super Eagles played with more intensity which was lacking in the first half as they fought hard to find leveller but the Tunisians were resolute at the back.
Moses Simon, Wilfred Ndidi and Sadiq Umar all came to scoring the equaliser late on, again it was not to be as the match ended 1-0 in favour of Tunisia. The North Africans will next play against Burkina Faso that beat Gabon 7-6 via penalty kicks.
