Nigeria’s Under 20 women’s football team, the Falconets on Saturday started their quest for a ticket to represent Africa in next year’s FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup final in Costa Rica on a brighter note as they thrashed the Central Africa Republic (CAR) team 7-0 in Douala to earn a commanding first-leg advantage.
This is even as Falconets’ victory which is achieved away from home will be a big relief to Nigerian fans who were devasted by the 4-2 hammering of the senior women’s football team, Super Falcons by South Africa’s Banyana Banyana in the final of the Aisha Buhari Cup played on Tuesday at Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos.
But the younger girls on Saturday at Stade Japoma de Douala, destroyed their hapless opponents from CAR 7-0 with Nigeria’s Mercy Idoko scoring two quick goals in the 2′ and 5′ minutes while Esther Onyenezide and Joy Jerry added two more goals in the 34′ and 44′ minutes to put Nigeria four goals up at halftime.
On resumption, the Coach Christopher Musa Danjuma tutored Falconets added three more goals scored by Deborah Abiodun, Taiwo Lawal, and Philomena Adoo Yina to complete the Coupe de grace against the girls from CAR just as this result may force the football authorities in CAR to shun the return leg of the 2nd round slated for Lagos on October 6.
Sportsrevelation reports that the winner of the two legs tie will face either Egypt or Congo in the 3rd round even as only two African countries will qualify for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup final in Costa Rica in 2022.
Elsewhere, Zambia’s U-20 women’s football team humiliated Malawi 6-0 in the first leg of the 2nd round played at the weekend in Ndola while Rwanda lost 0-4 to Ethiopia at home.South Africa’s U-20 women’s football team like their senior sisters went to Mozambique to them at home 1-0, the same result Burkina Faso achieved over Gambia in Baku.
