Tokyo 2020: Zambia bows out of Olympics as Sweden, Netherlands US qualify for next round

Inspite of the heroics of inspirational captain, Barbara Banda, Africa’s sole representative in the women’s football event of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Copper Queens of Zambia ended its campaign with a 1-0 defeat to Brazil just as the three European countries Great Britain, Netherlands and Sweden booked their tickets for the quarter final stage.

But Zambia’s woes in Tokyo continued as they were reduced to ten players in the 13th minute after Lushomo Mweemba received her marching orders and six minutes later, Brazil scored the solitary goal of the game from Alves da Silva Andressa.
The first woman to score two hat-tricks at the Olympics, Barbara Banda could not add to her six-goal tally which she achieved in her first two games as Zambia with one point from three games bowed out of the tournament scoring 7 goals and conceding 15.

Netherlands line-up against Zambia

The team will now shift its focus on the 2022 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) Qualifiers against Malawi.

Netherlands top the Group F with 7 points, scoring 21 goals with 10 goals against Zambia, 8 goals against China and 3 against Brazil but the South Americans finished second on 7 points too.
Elsewhere , in Group E, Great Britain and Canada played out 1-1 on Tuesday and both qualified with 7 and 5 points respectively while Japan with 4 points has also made it to the last 8 teams.

In Group G, Sweden was the only team that won all three matches to garner all 9 points after ending the 44th-match unbeaten run of United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) in Japan. Sweden beat New Zealand 2-0 on Tuesday to complete the annihilation of teams in that group.

Multiple Olympics Gold Medallists Team USA however finished second with 4 points just as Australia’s Matildas also got 4 points to qualify from the group.
