Turkish Women’s Cup: Nigeria whitewash Equatorial Guinea 9-0, Falcons in goals feast

African champions, Nigeria’s Super Falcons whitewashed  Equatorial Guinea’s Nzalang National 9-0 in their third and final match of the Turkish Women’s Cup competition played at the Emir Sports Complex in Antalya on Tuesday morning.

 It was supposed to be a tricky match for the Nigerian ladies because of the pedigree of the their opponents who had in two occasions won the coveted African Women Championships (AWC) beating Nigeria in their first win on home soil. 

But like the last time out in Gold Coast at the last Championship held in Ghana, Super Falcons came out on Tuesday charging at their Afri can rivals and it was not long before Nigeria’s budding star, Glory Ogbonna overlapped from her defensive position to open the floodgate of goals against the Guineans. Ogbonna scored in the 8th minute of the game.

Team Captain, Asisat Oshoala bagged four of the total with goals in the 11^th, 13^th (penalties), 26^th and 85^th minutes respectively just as Uchenna Kanu (36^th), Charity Adule (38^th), new-girl Toni Oyedupe Payne (43^rd) and Gift Monday (69^th) minutes also weighed in to condemn the two-time African champions to a humiliating defeat.

Overall, the Nzalang National scored no goal at the tournament, lost all three matches and conceded a total of 16 goals.

The Falcons have much to brag about having won all three matches, scoring 11 goals and refusing to allow any goal into their net as goalkeepers Tochukwu Oluehi (against CSKA Moscow and Uzbekistan) and Christy Ohiaeriaku kept things absolutely tight at the rear.

Indeed, the match did not live up to its pre-tournament billing with many women’s football followers thinking that Equatorial Guinea will give Nigeria a run for their money but it was not to be as Super Falcons went goals crazy with defender Ogbonna stting the pace very early in the game before Oshoala, four-time African Woman Player of the Year, netted twice from six yards as the Guineans conceded penalties within two minutes.

Oshoala, who was Player of the Tournament and Top Scorer at the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Canada in 2014, made it four in the 26^th minute, before former junior international Uchenna Kanu, Charity Adule and Oyedupe Payne ensured a 7-0 half-time lead.

The Falcons simply cruised in the second half with Gift Monday, in the 69^th and Oshoala with another goal five minutes to the end.
