Nigeria’s U-17 women’s football team, the Flamingos will depart Abuja tomorrow for a date with Guinea in Conakry on Saturday just as Botswana were handed a shock defeat by Morocco who won 1-0 in a first round first leg of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup India 2020 African qualifiers.
The Young Zebras of Botswana are now faced with a mammoth task to overturn the scores when they face Morocco in a fortnight in the second leg.
Morocco attacked from the first whistle and were unlucky in the 17th minute when Botswana goalkeeper Thobo Monageng saved the well taken free kick by Ikram Neddar.
Five minutes later Morocco finally scored the only goal of the day through Salma Tammar beating Monageng from close range, giving the visitors a first led advantage.
Despite the loss, Botswana coach Tapaphiwa Gaebolae is upbeat her charges can overturn the books in the reverse in a fortnight.
‘If they managed to beat us on our home soil we can do same at their backyard. Credit goes to my girls; they played well even though they did not convert their chances. We will rectify our mistakes before leaving for Morocco,” Gaebolae said.
Three countries will represent Africa in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup from 2-21 November 2020 in India.
In fact it has been a first leg of away victories for the visiting teams with Cameroon and Ghana winning big away from home. Cameroon thrashed hapless Sao Tome and Principe 4-0 away from home while Ghana beat Liberia 2-0 in Monrovia.
