The glamorous Union of European Football Association (UEFA) Champions League for the 2019/2020 season has entered its crucial knockout round with big European clubs pitched against each other after the draws for the Round of 16 was concluded today in Nyon, Switzerland.
A careful look at the pairings showed that big clubs are meeting themselves early in the competition if the match-up between the defending champions, Liverpool and Spanish tough club, Atletico Madrid is anything to rely upon.
Thirteen-times winners Real Madrid were drawn against English Premier league champions, Manchester City while title-holders Liverpool must face Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid. City has yet to beat the Spanish side with two draws and two defeats in their previous four meetings.
In other ties, Serie A champions Juventus will face French side Olympique Lyonnais, Paris St Germain will play Borussia Dortmund and Barcelona were pitted against an unpredictable Napoli. Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham Hotspur side will play Red Bull Leipzig, who are in the knockout stages for the first time, while struggling English Premier league club, Chelsea has been drawn against German champions, Bayern Munich parading clinical finishers in Robert Lewandowski, Philippe Coutinho, Thomas Muller and Ivan Perisic among other deadly attackers.
The Deputy General Secretary of UEFA Giorgio Marchetti conducted the draw today just as he was joined by Hamit Altintop and Kelly Smithon on the stage to help with the process.
