Super Eagles. ..Joe Aribo is now a member of the team
Nigeria’s Super Eagles new kid on the block, Josephe Ayodele-Aribo, who plays for Glasgow Rangers in Scotland has revealed why he preferred playing for Nigeria to his adopted country, England.
Aribo who has scored in the Super Eagles’ last two international games, against Ukraine (2-2) and Brazil (1-1) – incidentally the two of three matches he has played for Nigeria said he did not think twice to choose Nigeria over England because he feels more loved in his own father’s country.
Speaking exclusively to our reporter on Wednesday in Uyo after starting his first home game for Nigeria in the country’s 2-1 victory over Benin Republic in the Match Day 1 of the 2021 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying tie at Akwa Ibom International Stadium, Aribo disclosed that he took the decision to represent Nigeria instead of England because he has seen at close quarters the faith of none English players who had played for the Three Lions in the past.
According to him, those who chose to play for England but who are not original indigenes of the country are not loved the same way the Britons love their own, adding that he has no iota of doubt in his mind that he will be more loved in Nigeria than in England hence he settled to play for the Super Eagles.
Aribo who is also in the Super Eagles team that has landed in Maseru, Lesotho for Sunday’s AFCON 2021qualifiers Match Day 2 encounter with the Likuena (Crocodiles) at the Maseru-Setsoto Stadium was right to have chosen to wear the Green-White-Green colour of Nigeria because he has already caught the attention of the football-crazy Nigerian citizens who now love him with all their hearts.
The skillful player tasted the love of his countrymen and women on Wednesday at the Nest of Champions, Akwa Ibom International Stadium when fans cheered his every move in the crunch match against the tricky Squirrels of Benin Republic just as the Super Eagles Technical Adviser, Gernot Rohr who had earlier told the media that Aribo would not start the game in Uyo due to late arrival to camp later changed his mind to field the dazzling midfielder in the match.
This clearly showed that Coach Rohr has made Aribo one of his regulars, a rare opportunity for the Glassgow Rangers performer to announce himself as one of the emerging world best players out of Africa. Again, Aribo may have made a better choice to line out for Nigeria at senior level because England would not give him as much playing time as he will get playing for Nigeria.
