Megan Rapinoe of the USA celebrates after scoring her team’s first goal with team mates Samantha Mewis and Alex Morgan during the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup France Final match.

Following the unimpressive performance of the African players in the last FIFA Women’s World Cup final in France, no African player made the provisional list of 20 women football nominees unveiled by the organizers of the yearly Ballon d’ Or.

Nigeria, Cameroon and South African teams represented Africa at the premier women’s football showpiece in France last summer but South Africa crashed out without winning a match while Nigeria and Cameroon ended their campaign in the round of 16. This ensured that no African player is found worthy to make the 2019 Ballon d’Or nominee list.

Meanwhile, the 2019 women nominee list is dominated by the United States of America, France, Netherlands, Sweden and England players with Team USA producing four nominees in Alex Morgan (Orlando Pride, USA), Megan Rapinoe (Reign FC, USA), Rose Lavelle (Washington Spirit, USA) and Tobin Heath (Portland Thorns, USA).
