My Ball…..Nigerian player (R) controls ball against Cameroon player (L).
With the dream of Nigeria’s Super Falcons retaining the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) trophy they won in Morocco last year now evaporated like the early morning dews, the attention of the team will shift to the crunchy 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup Qualifying Play-off 2 against old foes South Africa on Thursday, August 13, 2026 at Moulay Rachid Stadium, Casablanca.
Nigeria was eliminated from further contestation for the WAFCON title after the 10-time African champions were beaten 1-0 by the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon in the quarter-finals clash on Sunday at Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca.
Nigeria’s opponents South Africa was also sent packing from the ongoing WAFCON by host country Morocco after the Banyana Banyana fell 1-2 to the Atlas Lionesses at Moulay El Hassan Stadium, Rabat on Saturday.
On the same day, two West African neighbours Ivory Coast and Ghana will play in the World Cup Play-off 1 at Larbi Zaouli Stadium, Casablanca.
Ivory Coast was defeated 2-1 by Algeria on Saturday at Moulay Rachid Stadium, Casablanca while Ghana was beaten 1-0 in the quarter-finals by debutants Malawi on Sunday at Moulay Rachid Stadium, Casablanca.
According to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) statement, the two winners of the two Play-off matches will qualify for the inter-confederation play-offs.
Meanwhile, 10 teams with two each from Africa, Asia, CONCACAF, CONMEBOL plus one from Oceania one from Europe will take part in the Intercontinental Play-Off Tournament which has been divided into two phases thus:
– *Phase 1*: November to December 2026. The 2 African teams play here
