Mission Impossible. .. Super Falcons forward Chinwendu Ihezue failed to score

The losing streak of Super Falcons have refused to abate as the team was once again beaten 1-0 by host country, Mexico’s senior women’s team in the early hours of Thursday in the first match of the 4-nation invitational tournament tagged Women’s Revelation Cup.

An 85th-minute goal scored by forward, Kiana Palacios was all the Mexicans needed to defeat the Nigerians who have not won a match in six straight Grade A games in the past consecutive seven months by a lone goal inside the León Stadium, Mexico.
Prompt News understands that the Falcons were not super on the night as they continued their search for a first win since beating Cameroon in the quarter-finals of the  WAFCON in Morocco last July.
Nigeria started the match brightly, although both teams could have opened the scoring within the opening five minutes but was not to be.
However, stand-in captain Rasheedat Ajibade made an early clearance to deny the hosts an early while Toni Payne threatened on the other end of the pitch.
Moments later, striker Ifeoma Onumonu had a free kick in a dangerous area, causing chaos, but no one was on hand to apply the finish.
The Mexicans grew into the encounter, and they should have broken the deadlock just past the half-hour mark, but Lizabeth Ovalle missed a sitter to save the Falcons’ blushes.
Head Coach Randy  Waldrum was forced into making a change moments before halftime as Glory Ogbonna came on to replace Rofiat Imuran, who was stretched out due to injury.
Shortly after coming on, the new entrant became the first player to be booked for a poor challenge on the edge of the box.
Deep into stoppage time, goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie came to the team’s rescue, making a fine stop from Anika Rodriguez’s effort from distance to keep the scoreline goalless at the interval.
On resumption,  Nigeria made a double substitution as Francesca Ordega and  Chinwendu Ihezuo gave way for Mexico-based, Uchenna Kanu and New invitee, Jennifer Echegili.
Still, Mexico continued to look more dangerous in attack, but the Super Falcons were not without a fight. Ajibade failed to make her effort count after Nigeria won a free-kick in a promising area.
Mexico nearly made the Atletico Madrid star pay for her profligacy, but Lizabeth Ovalle missed another glorious chance to hand El Tri the advantage.
Another injury scare for the Super Falcons surfaced in the 70th minute as Christy Ucheibe needed treatment after going down under a difficult challenge. The Benfica midfielder could not shake off the knock and had to leave the pitch, with Halimatu Ayinde taking her place.
And in the 85th minute, Mexico had their breakthrough as Kiana Palacios headed in a cross to beat Chiamaka Nnadozie and extend Nigeria’s losing streak to six matches.
Elsewhere, the Costa Rican’s women’s football team forced their  Colombian counterparts to a 1-1 draw in the other match played on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the latest defeat by Mexico has stretched Nigeria’s senior women football team’s losing streak to six in a row, spanning seven months and  dating back to Friday, July 22, 2022 when Copper Queens of Zambia defeated Super Falcons 1-0 in the 3rd Place Match of the 2022 Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
Earlier in the competition Nigeria had lost to the current African Champions South Africa in the group match before losing to host, Morocco 5-4 on penalties in the semi final match on July 18, 2022.
The former African Champions have been on a free fall since then as they have failed to win a   single match with Nigeria losing back to back in Two-match international friendly matches against the United States of America (USA) Women’s National Team (USWNT) in September 2023.
Team USA thrashed Nigeria 4-0 in the first match played in Kansas City on September 3 just as the 9-time African Champions suffered 2-1 defeat
again three days later in Washington D C to end the US tour on a sad note.

Not a Laughing Matter. …Head Coach Randy Waldrum looks unperturbed over Super Falcons’s free fall in the recent time.

The Coach Randy Waldrum led Super Falcons embarked on a trip of Asia a month later where the team was mauled 2-0 by Nashiko of Japan in an international friendly match on October 6, 2022 at Noevir Stadium in Kobe, Japan.

However, the Super Falcons will play their second match of the Mexico invitational tournament against Costa Rica on Tuesday, February 21.
